Welcome from Dr Jude Clancy - Year 1 Civil Engineering Coordinator

Welcome to Year 1 of your Civil Engineering degree. Regardless of your path to get here, you now face exciting challenges and opportunities over the next few years! Make the most of your Welcome Week activities to understand your course, university policies, and support mechanisms.

Please participate in the social events planned which will help you to get to know your new classmates – you will be working closely with them very soon.As your year coordinator, I will be dealing with any issues that arise in Year 1, providing support and being a point of contact for your feedback. The coming weeks will be challenging, so don’t hesitate to seek help from academics, reception, library, student support, and technical teams. We especially pride ourselves on the various support mechanisms available and we will be making you aware of these in time.We look forward to meeting you and supporting you on your journey to becoming a civil engineer.

Important: Attendance at Welcome Week Events

Welcome Week for September 2024 will take place from 23rd – 27th September 2024, with a range of events taking place each day. Effort should be made by you to attend all events listed within the below timetable.

Events are a chance to gain insight to your chosen degree programme, ask questions and get to know both staff and students in your department. We look forward to meeting you!

Please see below for a list of events organised by your Faculty and new Department. For some sessions, there are multiple opporutnities to attend. If you don’t think you can make it to the session we have recommended for your programme, make sure to check if there is another chance during the week.

23rd September 2024

10:00 - 12:00 - Year 1 Welcome Talk - 014, Great Hall

Key Academic Staff from your Department will provide you with an overview of what to expect throughout Year 1 Civil Engineering.

12:00 - 14:00 - Welcome Social with the Civil Engineering Society - 014, Great Hall

Ahead of the Fresher's Fayre on Wednesday (25th) come along and get to know your Society! In this session a quiz will be hosted by the Civil Engineering Society with pizza to be eaten and prizes to be won! 

14:00 - 15:00 - Year 1 Academic Drop - In - 014, Great Hall

There's a lot to take in in your first few days. If you have questions, your Academic Staff will be able to help answer anything you want to know about your programme.

24th September 2024

10:00 - 12:30 - Get to Know Your Mates Practical Activity - 108, Y Twyni

In groups, you'll complete a design task to help you get to know your colleagues and test your structural engineering knowledge. This activity is not assessed, but there will be prizes to be won.

12:30 - 13:30 - Lunch - 014, Great Hall

Get to know staff and students in your new department over lunch. As part of this event, we will be providing food with options to cater for vegan, vegetarian and halal. If you have an allergy or other dietary requirement please let us know by 12pm on 18th September by completing this short Microsoft Form.

13:30 - 15:00 - ICE Introduction and Activity - 014, Great Hall

Representatives of the ICE will be in attendance to discuss the roles of the body and how it can help your studies - you'll also be given the opportunity to join for FREE as a student member on the day.

15:00 - 16:00 - An Essential Guide to Your Studies - B004, Engineering Central

Come and meet your Faculty Student Experience and Information Team who are here to support you throughout your studies. This session is an opportunity to explore the support available to you as a student and any questions you may have about studying at the University.

25th September 2024

This day has been kept free to provide you an opportunity to attend the Student Union Fresher’s Fayre. Please note, this Fayre is taking place at the Swansea Bay Sports Park on Sketty Lane, not at the Bay Campus.

11:30 - 13:30 - Diversifying Voices - B001, Engineering Central

Join the Faculty EDI team for pizza and Zine making as you receive an introduction to the diverse community you are joining within Science and Engineering.

13:00 - 16:00 - All Faculties Welcome Fayre - Atrium, Engineering North

Find out more about ways to get involved, access support when you need it and make sure you have everything you need in place for your first week of teaching. There’ll also be chance to take part in competitions and get some freebies.
