Welcome Week for September 2024 will take place from 23rd – 27th September 2024, with a range of events taking place each day. Effort should be made by you to attend all events listed within the below timetable.

Events are a chance to gain insight to your chosen degree programme, ask questions and get to know both staff and students in your department. We look forward to meeting you!

Welcome to Mathematics ! 

Congratulations on your recent results and on being accepted to study Mathematics at Swansea University.  We are very much looking forward to meeting you and welcoming you into the Mathematics community here.  

We hope you are equally looking forward to starting your course, your time as a Swansea student, and the next stage of your life journey. We have been developing lots of new tools and techniques to give you a great learning experience, and we can't wait to share these with you.

Please see below for a list of events organised by your Faculty and new Department. For some sessions, there are multiple opporutnities to attend. If you don’t think you can make it to the session we have recommended for your programme, make sure to check if there is another chance during the week.

This timetable is relevant to students beginning Year 0 (Foundation) or Year 1 in Actuarial Science, Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, Mathematics and Computer Science, Mathematics and Sport Science, Mathematics for Finance or Pure Mathematics.

23rd September 2024

11:30 – 12:30 - Year 0, 1 and MSc Departmental Welcome Talk - 002, Computational Foundry

All students starting Foundation, Year 1 or an MSc in a Mathematics programme should attend this Departmental Welcome Talk with your Programme Director.

12:30 – 16:00 - Reps & Society Drop In – Mathematics Reading Room , Computational Foundry

Pop in to the Mathematics Reading Room - a chance to familiarise yourself with this key study space, meet your School Rep, and find out about the Mathematics society.

24th September 2024

10:00 - 11:00 - An Essential Guide to Your Studies - B004, Engineering Central

Come and meet your Faculty Student Experience and Information Team who are here to support you throughout your studies. This session is an opportunity to explore the support available to you as a student and any questions you may have about studying at the University. 

11:00 – 13:00 - Year 0 Programme Talk - 003, Computational Foundry

Key Academic Staff from your Department will provide you with an overview of what to expect throughout your Mathematics Foundation year.

11:00 – 13:00 - Year 1 Programme Talk - 002, Computational Foundry

Key Academic Staff from your Department will provide you with an overview of what to expect throughout Year 1 Mathematics.

13:00 - 15:30 - Year 0, 1 & PGT Welcome Social - 108, Y Twyni

Join your peers for a social to welcome all new Mathematics students. As part of this session, we will be providing lunch to include a variety of options for those with dietary requirements including Vegetarian, Vegan and Halal. If you have an allergy (e.g. nuts, gluten), please let us know by no later than 12pm on the 18th September by completing this short Microsoft Form.

25th September 2024

This day has been kept free to provide you an opportunity to attend the Student Union Fresher’s Fayre. Please note, this Fayre is taking place at the Swansea Bay Sports Park on Sketty Lane, not at the Bay Campus.

11:30 - 13:30 - Diversifying Voices - B001, Engineering Central

Join the Faculty EDI team for pizza and activities as you receive an introduction to the diverse community you are joining within Science and Engineering.

13:00 - 16:00 - All Faculties Welcome Fayre - Atrium, Engineering North

Find out more about ways to get involved, access support when you need it and make sure you have everything you need in place for your first week of teaching. There’ll also be chance to take part in competitions and get some freebies.
